Of the remaining composers of this period, Cowen, German, Tosti, and others, who are still writing songs at the present time, I shall have something to say in a subsequent chapter.l For the moment we must turn aside from composers to singers, and take a brief survey of the St. James's Hall ballad concerts, in the days when Sims Reeves, Santley, Lloyd, and Antoinette Sterling were at their zenith.
